Support for charity from NHS Norfolk

Hospital beds donated by NHS Norfolk will in June be taken by a charity to a maternity unit at a hospital in Romania.

The county’s health service has for several years been supporting TEECH (Telecom’s Eastern European Challenge), a registered charity since 1999.

Over the years, the charity has supported a range of organisations in eastern Europe, including hospitals, schools and orphanages.

The latest consignment from NHS Norfolk consists of six hydraulic beds from the former St Andrew’s Hospital in Thorpe St Andrew which will be transported to a maternity unit at a district general hospital in north east Romania.

Robin Lakey, Quality Assurance Officer at the Facilities Department of NHS Norfolk, said: “We’ve been supporting TEECH for three or four years now and have donated a range of items, such as beds, mattresses, bedside lockers, wheelchairs and walking aids.

“The six beds we have just given were in perfectly good working order but they were of the hydraulic variety which we’re currently phasing out in favour of electric beds.

“They are no use to us and we have limited storage space any way so we’re thrilled that that they can benefit people in Romania and it is our pleasure to donate them.”

Eddie Anwyn, of Mendham Lane, Harleston, Norfolk, who is one of eight TEECH committee members, thanked NHS Norfolk and its predecessor organisations for their continued support.

“I’ll be taking the beds out with a load of other equipment in June which will be my 20th trip to eastern Europe,” he said.

“The beds they are replacing are virtually antiques with rusty springs and I know from previous trips how much this latest donation will be appreciated.

“The situation in Romania has improved enormously since I first went there about 17 years ago but there is still a great need for even the most basic equipment.”

TEECH started in 1998 when a group of people who worked together for BT took up the challenge from a work colleague to help repair two hospitals in Bucharest, Romania. Although it keeps “Telecom” in its name, the charity is a non-BT organisation and totally independent.
