Telecoms Eastern European Challenge   Would you be willing to give up two weeks of your time to help a local charity take much needed aid and assist on projects like helping to refurbish a school, orphanage, hospital or old people’s homes in some of the poorest parts of Eastern Europe? 2012 dates are the 11th to the 25th August.  All we ask is that volunteers raise a minimum of £650 in fundraising.  For a volunteer information pack on this years trip please contact our secretary on gemma @ teech.org or 0779 5254946 for a chat
Interested in Volunteering?   "Volunteering is defined as any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something which aims to benefit the environment or individuals or groups other than (or in addition to) close relatives."  Volunteering England Information Sheet 2008. All we ask is that volunteers raise a minimum of £650 in fundraising. This money goes towards funding the project and covers your travel expenses like the coach trip there and back, insurance to work abroad, accommodation and food whilst on location.
Contact TEECH If you or anyone you know might be interested in this 'unique' experience or have any queries please contact gemma@teech.org or on 07795 254946 for more information.   TEECH are also interested in volunteers to help with other fundraising and to attend our packup days
TEECH 2011 Shoe Box Appeal   TEECH visited Romania and Moldova for two weeks at the beginning of January 2012 to deliver over 1000 generously donated shoeboxes to children and food parcels to families. The Moldovan Christmas is celebrated on the 7th January therefore we could truly bring Christmas to the children when they celebrate the occasion.
Donations in 2010 helped... To turn a dis-used classroom into to 2 toilets/washrooms; one each for boys and girls.  On arrival the team set about pulling up the existing wooden floor and dividing the large room into 2 smaller ones.  This was done by using timber struts and plaster board and a new doorway was cut into the main corridor so as they each had a separate entrance.
Donations in 2009 helped... The TEECH 2009 Project was to help restore a wing in the Robert Cole Centre, a school for special needs children that was damaged in a fire. While on location it was brough to our attention of a group of homeless people who were living in a adjacent wing with no toilets or running water. Some of the big achievements made possible by donations obtained during the year... Repair the computer wing Clean and decorate the stair way Repair showers for the children Install a toilet for the homeless people (photo)

Challenge!  Fit 2 bathrooms, 1 cloakroom, update the kitchen and decorate classrooms...up for it??

Oh and only 7 days to do it.....still think you are up for it?

If so, then join TEECH from 11th to 25th August 2012 on their trip to the Eastern European country of Moldova to improve the lives of the children in the town of Valcinet (in the district of Calarasi).

The project is based in the town’s school where currently the children use a shed type building in the grounds of the school, which house ‘holes in the ground’ for them to use as a toilet. TEECH believe the children deserve more, we are talking about a country in Europe and children using outside toilets in the 21st century. TEECH will create a bathroom (containing toilets, sinks and hand dryers) for both the boys and girls, therefore providing them
with the basic hygiene and privacy they should expect and experience in their young lives.

TEECH work closely with the local Mayor and the school to ensure we understand the requirements of the school and the local community. During the project the community will be involved in the project and there is always
the opportunity for volunteers to interact with the locals and understand their culture and see their beautiful country.

About TEECH

TEECH_logoTEECH was established in 1998 when a group of BT staff took up the challenge from a colleague to help repair two hospitals in Bucharest. About fifty volunteers traveled to Bucharest under the banner of ‘BTL Aid to Romania’ and set about painting, plastering, installing lighting and generally making the hospitals cleaner, safer and brighter places.

The Charity retains the "telecoms" name and BT continue to provide assistance with transport, but TEECH is an independent organisation which welcomes volunteers from all walks of life.

Every year the TEECH trustees visit possible projects and decide which would best benefit from help and how they could be made self-sufficient.

A team of approximately 20-40 volunteers armed with tools and equipment travel overland by coach to endeavor to complete a project in August each year.  We also deliver aid to various contacts in the local area (e.g beds and medical supplies to hospitals, clothes and shoes for orphanages)

donations-fpTEECH volunteers spend the rest of the year collecting donated items (new and used) and acquiring items which have been requested for the project (wishlist).

Our members are 100% unpaid volunteers so all fundraising for TEECH goes towards our projects

It was little short of a miracle that so much was achieved in such a short period of time this year. Only the total commitment and dedication of the volunteers, who gave up 2 weeks of their annual leave and raised sponsorship and or paid for the privilege made it possible.

When Alan our project manager and John our planner arrived at the school, three days ahead of the coach, there was no water into the school at all. When we made a temporary connection in the boiler house, not only did the numerous leaks flood the boiler room but when we reached the dining room we found about 2 inches of water at the deep end [the floor slopes towards the kitchen]. We had to engage the services of a local plumber to sort that out for us!

TEECH encourages its volunteers to raise money to go towards paying for their trip, holding events such as a Masquerade Ball & Fancy Dress Disco's and creating Justgiving donation pages are a great way to cover this cost.
